We’re delighted to celebrate Earth Day today by sharing the news that the National Space Centre has been selected as the Irish organiser for the European-wide CASSINI Hackathon. CASSINI is the European Commission’s programme to support space-based entrepreneurs. The announcement on Earth Day is particularly fitting as the theme for the summer hackathon is Digitising Green Spaces, with specific challenges focused on:

  • Discover your city
  • Outdoor health & fitness
  • Protecting our rural areas

CASSINI includes a series of 2 hackathons in 2021 and another 4 hackathons in the following 2 years upon renewal of contract. These hackathons are a first step within the Competitive Space Start-ups for Innovation (CASSINI) initiative of the European Commission to grow the number of start-ups that successfully commercialize innovative European space technologies.

The first Hackathon will take place 18 – 20 June. Each Hackathon runs simultaneously at up to 10 locations, and Irish teams will compete against teams from Portugal, Greece, France, Netherlands, Slovenia, Switzerland, Cyprus, Estonia, and the Czech Republic. We are looking forward to announcing our sponsors and partners next week, and to opening registration and lead-up events from 1 May.
