As entries for the European Satellite Navigation Competition are now being accepted, a look through some previous winners of the competition demonstrates the positive and inspiring effect satellite navigation technology can have on the way we live our lives. Previous winners of the competition have come up with ideas that range from augmented reality navigation systems that draw driving instructions on your car windscreen to technology which assists rescue co-ordinators to maximise the efficiency of search and rescue dogs during rescue operations. Last year’s winner ULF-MC developed a solution that allows accurate indoor navigation with your smartphone. Using modulated magnetic fields and the mobile internet the system provides the user with exact positions and related information. The potential of satellite navigation across so many sectors is infinite!

Some of these great winning ideas have gone onto commercial success whether as stand alone companies or in partnership with others. The advantages of success in the European Satellite Navigation Competition are not limited to the extra publicity and great prizes on offer. The awards ceremony in Germany is a meeting of the best individuals and top companies in the satellite navigation field with contacts and partnerships made every year. Dirk Elias, last year’s winner remarked that-

‘Best of all, winning the competition has been our ticket to joining an alliance of companies seeking to achieve more standardisation in the field of indoor positioning systems, which we consider the most important step in brining about a broad implementation of seamless indoor navigation in the future!’

This is the tenth year that the competition is being run and it promises to be bigger and better than ever! What are you waiting for? To enter your ideas in the competition go to the competition ideas database which will remain open until 30 June.
