ESA is giving 20 developers the chance to spend one week in its ESRIN offices in Frascati, Italy. For the second year running the ESA App camp will take place between 3rd-10th June 2013 allowing developers to showcase their creativity.
The aim of the camp is to develop smartphone apps that use Earth Observation data, which ESA will provide access to. Participants will be divided into teams of four and will work on one of the five predefined categories:
- Land Monitoring using GIOLand
- Discovering Climate Change with GMES
- Crowd sourcing in support of GMES

The winning team will be selected by a judging panel of ESA representatives and each team member will receive an iPad3. The 2012 winners were ShareAware whose app aims to help people learn and understand about the environment. Users of the app are permitted to browse datasets and report on certain environmental themes.
Participants are selected for the camp based on the creativity of their previous works with regards content, usability, design and the underlying business concepts. Travel expenses and accommodation are provided by ESA.
